Simple Gifts

I started playing the bassoon when I was twelve. I had started playing the clarinet the year previous, and was recruited to the double-reed world with promises of easy college scholarships. Even through I stuck with it through the end of high school, I was never able to get much specialized bassoon instruction, and little information on how to care for and maintain reeds. Even though a friend gave me an old family member’s bassoon on an essentially permanent loan, I wasn’t in any position to go through any auditions and choose other majors in college.

For the most part, I left the bassoon in its case until the beginning of 2010, when a friend started up a casual orchestra with my church. We were quite the motley crew of instruments, ages and skills, but the regular practices and goals were what I needed to get started again. Continue reading

Passwords and Security

In light of the recent attacks at Gawker and Sony that exposed the login information for millions of users, the importance of implementing secure password routines is now back in the top of mind for security experts. While many of these experts will recommend very strict policies and randomly generated passwords, these may not always be practical for every staff member at your organization. In my blog post this week for NPower Northwest, I give practical advice for nonprofits on how to choose strong passwords that their staff can use to protect their data. Mitigating Virus Infections

Recently at NPower, we have been noticing an increase in the number of calls to our Support Line over the last few weeks related to virus and malware infection. This week, I worked with our network support consultants to prepare this blog post in order to help our nonprofit clients better protect their network from infection and help them recover more easily when they occur. This post is geared for the nonprofit manager who is looking for ideas on how to craft policies and procedures to reduce their support costs and needs surrounding virus and malware infection.
