Signal Through the Noise

Last week was (finally) my big moving week, and it culminated with our 1,697 mile road trip to the Twin Cities. The first third of our trip was filled with heavy rain and snow pelting our car, and the rest of the trip was marked by very heavy winds. While we were able to drive through the weather just fine, we learned in both cases that the driver’s window doesn’t seal well, and we had to work pretty hard to hear our music and radio shows properly.

As I was staring down the highway before us, I thought of this as a good metaphor for living in the new uber-connected world. It can be very difficult to hear the proverbial signal through the noise when we are constantly connected to Twitter, Facebook, RSS, Pinterest, Reddit, Stumbleupon, and you get my point. Communications Lessons from Major League Soccer

Those who know me or follow me on Twitter know that I am a huge fan of soccer and the Seattle Sounders. I played a bit of extracurricular soccer as a child, but it wasn’t until I found the supporter community here in Seattle that I became a passionate fan of “the beautiful game”.

I’ve had soccer on my mind since watching the Sounders’ fantastic home opener last weekend. In reading up a bit on the history of Major League Soccer (MLS) in the US, I found some insights that I would like to share with you on nonprofit communications strategies and getting started in social media. SocialBro and Hootsuite: A match made in limbo?

I wrote a bit ago about the new tool SocialBro, and how it’s a must-have for anyone with a professional Twitter presence. Today they announced a very exciting new feature, the ability to send the results of your “Best Time to Tweet” report to Hootsuite. As a long-time fan of Hootsuite, my immediate reaction was of joy. However, there’s definitely a lot of room to improve, and I can’t wait for the next version. Read the rest of this entry »
